“The Cricket” begins…

Water intrusion was caused by the chimney’s poorly sealed flashing and substandard height cricket. The new cricket was properly framed and sheathed. This created the basis for the roof to shed water around the chimney rather than relying on the flashing.

After constructing the new cricket, it was time to suit up and grind a groove for the new flashing. A reglet was chosen over the typical lead step flashing for a clean look. Once the groove was ground in, the ice and water shield was applied. Followed by new shingles and step flashing. Due to an incoming storm, the reglet flashing was temporarily installed to prevent any water from entering the residence.

The reglet counter flashing was designed specifically for the Provost’s chimney with a 7″ reveal and a “keeper” to lock it into the mortar joint. The joint itself also received special treatment to lock the new mortar into the granite stones. The Cricket is now complete with three redundant layers of protection against water intrusion.

The final details of the cricket will have to wait for the completion of stages two and three…but for now the residence will remain dry once again.

Thank you for following 45North on this project! Stage two is on the way…
