45North, LLC received a message from a homeowner stating that their chimney was leaking water into the residence. After speaking with them and reviewing some photos, it was determined that the chimney was improperly flashed. The roof covering was recently replaced by metal as opposed to the asphalt shingles prior. Different roof coverings require different flashing methods. At some point, tar was added to the original flashing to stop the leaking. However, this was a temporary solution and failed shortly after.
The long term solution was to re-flash the chimney with the proper reglet flashing. 45North designed custom bent flashing for this particular application and installed it on the chimney.
