The re-pointing turns to rebuilding…

As a stretch of rain bared down of the project, the plan to add a temporary roof structure over the north side of the chimney was executed. This allowed for work to continue in less than ideal conditions.

As the largest exposed side of the chimney was started, the re-pointing led to a rebuild of the northwest corner. What began as a couple of stones detaching, led to multiple stones being removed in order to properly fix the most deteriorated portion of the chimney. These stones were marked for location and orientation during removal to ensure their proper placement during replacement.

As before, all internal voids were filled with structural mortar prior to the external stone being replaced. This section of the chimney was the biggest unforeseen issue that required extra time and care to ensure a quality fix.

The chimney deterioration was worse on the northern and western sides. This is due to years of weather exposure, which typically comes from those directions.

The stones were marked for orientation during removal and set aside. Any voids internally were filled with structural mortar prior to reinstalling the stones. All other joints were re-pointed with the same procedure used for the rest of the chimney.
