Stage three reaches the halfway point…
As the restoration of the uprights continues, more rebuilding was necessary. The center upright was badly deteriorated like the previous west side upright.
Once again, temporary supports were installed and all stones were marked during removal for location and orientation. New granite stones were sourced to replace spalling bricks. The rebuild was partially completed, allowed to cure and then finished. This assured there were no voids in the mortar, to achieve maximum structural strength.
Once the center upright was complete, the East side upright was re-pointed. With all three uprights complete, stage three was halfway to completion.
Stage three completion…
With the uprights complete, it was time to address the chimney cap and crown. They both needed to be resurfaced to provide a new layer of protection against the weather.
The resurfacing process began by removing any loose aggregate with a wire wheel on a grinder. Then the surface was cleaned to provide a suitable base for the concrete bonding adhesive to adhere to. The final step was applying a special blend of concrete products to ensure a strong weather resistant layer that will last for years to come.
With stage three complete, everything above the roofline was done. The completion of stage two is the focus of tomorrow’s post. Then it’s time for the the post we’ve all been waiting for…the final reveal! Stay tuned…
